All about Our Logs

Discover why Northern White Cedar has been our go-to for nearly 100 years.

Here at Ward Cedar Log Homes, we’re firm believers that building with logs and timbers is always the right choice, but we’ve been in the business long enough — 98 years, to be exact — to know that not all log, hybrid or timber homes are created equal.

The quality of wood used to build your home matters. As the first line of defense against long-term maintenance issues, it lays a foundation for longevity and can make or break your home ownership experience. That’s why we rely only on the best of the best to build your home.

Here’s a quick primer on what makes Ward Cedar logs stand above the competition:

- What they’re made of: Northern White Cedar has been proven time and again to resist wood’s worst enemies, especially when compared to its eastern white pine competitor. In addition to its superpowers against insects, rot and aging, it is also known for withstanding shrinkage and warping.

- How they’re milled: Our milling technique takes the wood’s superior elements a step further by using only the heartwood — the center of the tree that offers the highest quality with the least checking. Next, our process involves air-drying the logs, which results in a beautifully colored log with minimal cracking, before planing. (Kiln drying can create internal tension and compromise natural color.) Finally, each log undergoes multiple quality control inspections before ever reaching your building site.

- Why they’re a no-brainer: The quality of our log product and milling process have allowed us to offer a 20-year warranty that covers log components against structural defects. This promise guarantees your peace of mind and a home that will be standing long and strong well into the future.
