Why Choose Cedar For Your Log Cabin
Posted by Ward Cedar Log Homes in
Building a log cabin or home is more than just an investment of time and money, it’s an investment into your family’s future. You want a home that is built to last, and that’s why the wood you choose matters. You’ll find many companies who build with pine, spruce or oak, but we believe that our northern white cedar logs stand above the rest.
In addition to its natural beauty, cedar has a number of intrinsic characteristics that make it well-suited to log home construction. Despite being grown in the swampy lands of northern Maine, cedar has a naturally low moisture point and a slow growth rate which produces a dense, stable wood that minimizes the twisting, warping, cracking and checking common to other wood species. Cedar is also highly resistant to decay, including mold and mildew and intrusion from pests. And, with the highest R-value of any wood commonly used in the log home industry, it offers superior insulating abilities that will keep your home efficient and comfortable year-round.
But it’s not just the wood that sets our logs apart, but what we do with it.
We’ve been sourcing our logs from the same trusted producers since Ward’s founding more than 100 years ago. Our commitment to building with only naturally renewable, local logs reflects our dedication to stewardship. In keeping with our commitment to sustainability, we fully air-dry each log for about six months until they reach a moisture content of 15% to 19%. This not only makes our production process more environmentally friendly (as compared to kiln drying) but also produces a high-quality log that is stable and visually appealing with minimal surface splits.
Once dried, the logs continue through our facility, where we take a hands-on approach. Rather than computerizing the milling process, we believe that nothing beats the human touch. Every log that goes into your home is inspected by a skilled set of eyes not once, or twice, but up to seven times by craftsman who have been with us for decades.
Once through milling, the logs are then labeled for ease-of-construction and stored under cover in one of our two 24,000-square-foot buildings until they are shipped off to become your new log home.
From start to finish, we are committed to producing the highest quality cedar logs so that your home is sure to last for generations to come.
