The Benefits of Cedar for Log Homes
Posted by Ward Cedar Log Homes in Log Homes Efficiency
When someone asks us why we use cedar, the answer is simple: because it works. Not just for a few years. Not just for looks. It works long-term. It holds up. And we've got over 100 years of homes that show it. Still, we get this question a lot: Why cedar over pine or another wood? Here's what we tell folks.
Cedar Doesn't Need Help to Last
Northern White Cedar is naturally resistant to insect, rot, and decay. No harsh chemical treatments are needed to hold up over time. And for us, that's important. We're building homes that are meant to last generations.
It Moves Less, Which Means Fewer Headaches
All wood moves a little. It expands and contracts with the weather. But cedar moves less than most. That means less settling, less warping, fewer cracks and fewer calls to your contractor six months after move-in. Cedar stays stable and that's why we stick with it.
It Insulates Better Than You Might Think
Cedar has one of the highest R-values of any wood used for log homes. That translates to lower energy bills and a more comfortable home through all four seasons.
It Ages Gracefully
Cedar doesn't just perform well, it looks good doint it. If you don't apply a stain, it will weather naturally to a silver patina. Or if you prefer some color, apply a stain, like Q8 Log Oil, to keep it fresh. Either way, it wears well. There's a warmth and texture to cedar that just feels right in a log home.
It's What We've Used for 100+ Years For a Reason
We've been using Northern White Cedar from day one. We know how to work with it and we know how it performs. Most importantly, we've seen what it looks like 10, 20, 50 years down the road. It's dependable, it's beautiful, and for us, it's never been worth switching.
