Important Steps to Take Before Your Log Home Arrives

There are several important steps that should be taken prior to the arrival of your log home. These steps will help to insure satisfaction with your building project.

1.  Your building lot should be properly cleared and prepared prior to the delivery of any building materials.  To help minimize the erection time of your log home, your foundation should be installed prior to delivery of the log home package.

and you will want to arrange the materials in the order of intended use; i.e... floor framing closest to the foundation, logs next, etc. Also, you will want the building site accessible to a large tractor-trailer rig.  If it isn't, you will need to prepare for an alternate drop site.

2.  Many items that will arrive are shipped to you in a very dry condition.  It is to your advantage to keep such items dry and out of the weather.  Included in this group are doors, windows, flooring materials, T&G boards, railings, window and door trim.  Ideally, most of this material should be stored in a dray and enclosed room or building.  You may want to consider the local rental of an old trailer, (40' +/-) as a dry storage unit.  If you have no such storage area is available, it may be stored outside if properly protected.

3.  When stored outside, make certain the material is at least six inches off the ground and is completely wrapped in a moisture proof barrier.  Regardless of where stored, all items should be piled so that air can circulate evenly.  The top layer of material should be piled "face-down" so that ultra-violet sunlight will not discolor the finished face.  The bundles should be opened up with the poly or tarp removed on dry days and recovered at night.  With proper care, moisture content should not increase.

4.  Do not store any of the dry items in a new basement due to the extremely high moisture present in such areas.

Following these steps will help insure a smooth process of building your dream log home.
