How to Design Your Dream Log Home
Building a log home isn’t something you do on a whim. Most people come to us with an idea that’s been sitting in the back of their mind for years, sometimes decades. You picture the front porch. The big windows. A warm fire on a cold night. You know the feeling you’re after. What’s harder is knowing how to get there.
That’s where design comes in.
Designing your home isn’t about having all the answers upfront. It’s about taking what you do know, how you live, what you value, and shaping the space around it.
Here’s how we recommend starting that process.
Start With the Way You Live
Forget square footage for a second. Forget what looks good on paper. The first question is, how do you want to live?
- Do you need space for grandkids to visit?
- Do you hate laundry being on a different floor?
- Are you dreaming of quiet mornings with coffee on the porch?
- Or late dinners with a house full of people?
These are the things that shape your layout. Not trends. Not checklists. Just how you live, day to day.
Walk the Lot Before You Pick the Plan
Your land will reveal a great deal, including where the sun hits in the morning, how the wind moves, and where the best views are. Sometimes people fall in love with a floor plan before they really understand their lot. And while we can always adjust, starting with the land helps make sure your home feels settled, not just placed. Each lot comes with its own unique considerations.
Keep the Flow in Mind
Some of the best homes we’ve helped design aren’t the biggest, such as our Camp Series; they flow really well. The kitchen opens into the living room. The bedrooms are quiet and tucked away. There’s space to put things where they make sense.
Good design isn’t about adding more. It’s about making what you have feel right.
Don’t Be Afraid to Change the Plan
Most people start with one of our existing plans and then tweak it. Maybe you want to add a screened porch. Maybe you need a mudroom with room for boots and dogs. That’s normal. That’s expected. And that’s exactly what we’re here to help with.
Design is flexible. What matters is getting it right for you.
