Five Steps to Forever

After settling into your Ward Cedar log cabin, you’ll want to set up a maintenance program that will ensure your forever home lasts a lifetime. Here’s a handy five-step list to keep you on track.

1. Twice yearly, walk the perimeter of your home to visually identify potential issues, such as mold or mildew growth, insect holes or checking. In addition to the log walls, pay close attention to railings, deck floors, gutters, etc.

2. Keep log walls clean by pressure washing them annually, using a fan tip to prevent damage to the wood. For added cleaning power, apply a homemade solution or a ready-made cleanser available at your local log home supply store.

3. Fill any checking or cracks larger than one-quarter inch with new caulking material to keep out unwanted pests and water. Add chinking to fill any gaps that have been exposed by deteriorating product.

4. Perform a water test. Wet a patch of wood then watch to see if the spot darkens. If it does, moisture is soaking into the wood, and it’s time for a fresh coat of stain.

5. Before applying new stain (typically required every few years), clean the wood surfaces thoroughly. The best way to ensure long-lasting stain is to prepare your surfaces properly and follow the specific application directions on your chosen stain.
