Get Inspired with These Five Popular Customizations

There are a lot of reasons to love a home from Ward Cedar Log Homes — the natural warmth and beauty, the strong value, the sustainability factor, the energy efficiency… we could go on and on. But one of the best benefits of choosing a Ward log or timber home is that you can make it your own with features that will suit your family’s wants and needs. While you can go completely custom from the ground up, you can also pick one of our 100-plus, tried-and-true floor plans and work with our team of expert designers to add your own custom touches. You can make a small change here or there or go all out. The choice is yours! To get your wheels turning, we’re sharing the top five most common customizations among Ward clients.

Windows
The process of choosing windows for your home is a distinct opportunity to have a major impact on the look and feel of your home, inside and out. Not only can the right windows boost curb appeal and reinforce your home’s style, but they can also determine how you experience life inside the home. Windows usher in natural light, highlighting the beauty of your interiors, and are also an opportunity to frame the world around you. Capturing your home’s natural setting might require shifting the placement of windows to highlight a certain view or choosing a different type — say, swapping trapezoid windows for rectangular ones in the gable ends for maximum light exposure. Whatever your needs, the Ward design team can help you make window changes to suit your home’s location and style.

Entryway
Your home’s foyer sets the tone of your home anytime you and your guests walk through the door. Creating a welcoming and functional space is the best way to create a positive first impression. Depending on your family’s needs and preferences, the Ward team can help you modify the entry on any of our floor plans to fit your life. A few potential options: swap in a custom door, add (or detract) square footage, expand out a coat closet to create concealed space for hooks or cubbies, or incorporate sidelights or a transom around your front door to boost natural light.

Porches and Decks
Most Ward floor plans already include a porch, deck or combination of both, but many of our clients choose to modify these outdoor spaces. Some common changes include expanding out a deck to create added living space, screening in a portion of a deck for optimal enjoyment during mosquito season or adding a covering to allow for comfortable usage, rain or shine.

Room Placement
Changing up the size and position of rooms in a Ward ready-made floor plan will make your home feel like a fully custom endeavor. Whether you need to swap the placement of rooms in the floor plan to suit your property (perhaps positioning your primary bedroom away from the morning sunrise) or need to move interior partitions to expand a certain room, we can help every step of the way. One example is our Cedar Lane plan. With two bedrooms upstairs and two bedrooms downstairs, our clients often combine the two lower-level bedrooms into a single primary suite, providing ample room for a spacious bathroom and his-and-hers walk-in closets.

Dormers
The last common modification we see to our Ward plans is the addition of a shed dormer or gable dormer. Not only do dormers change the look of the exterior of the home, but they also boost usable interior space while staying within the same footprint. For example, in the Easton plan, incorporating a shed dormer allows for the expansion of an upstairs half bath into a full bath. If the Ward plan you choose allows for it, a dormer can be a smart way to add natural light and gain square footage. Our design experts can help you decide if it’s a choice that makes sense for your floor plan and family.
