Creating A Relaxing Master Suite

“Say Ahhh”

Top Design Tricks for Creating a Relaxing Master Suite.

The master suite is typically where you begin and end your day.  It’s a haven away from the activities and responsibilities of everyday life and should be designed with an eye towards rest and relaxation.  Here are our favorite ways to transform the bedroom and bathroom in your log, hybrid or timber home into a spa-like space.

Keep it Separate: If you’ll share your log cabin with other family members, positioning your master suite away from other bedrooms or shared spaces will allow you to slip away for solitude and enjoy peace and quiet no matter what other activities are happening in the home.

Go into Detail: While it’s common to include stunning architectural features, such as exposed timbers, in shared living spaces, such as the great room where they’ll get plenty of exposure, adding in a few architectural details to your master suite will make it feel extra special.  Go all-out with built-in cabinetry around the bed or special ceiling treatments, like a trey ceiling with tongue and groove or a vaulted ceiling with exposed beams.  Or keep it simple with a built-in window seat, topped with a comfy cushion and stack of books.
Invite the views: Incorporating ample windows into the design of the owner’s suite will not only usher in natural light (proven to have a host of health benefits), it will also allow you to enjoy the views outside your four walls.  In your bedroom, adding a wall of windows across from your bed — or even better, a set of French doors that open up to a deck or patio — will keep outdoors front and center. In your bathroom, positioning a jacuzzi tub in a corner flanked by windows to allow you to soak in the sights.
Fire it Up: If your floor plan and budget allow, adding a wood-burning or gas fireplace to your master suite will add an unmistakable sense of luxury.  Can’t build in the real deal?  Freestanding or built-in electric fireplaces create instant ambiance and invite relaxation with the flip of a switch.

Create Calm: The finishes and furnishings you choose for your master suite will go a long way in creating the look and feel of the space.  In the bedroom, a palette of quiet nature tones will inspire rest, while textiles in addition to your bedding, from rugs to curtains, will further soften the space. In the bathroom, a clean, clutter-free space with a few special touches, like artwork or plants, will set the tone for relaxation.
