Saving the Best for Last
A New Hampshire couple builds a forever Ward Cedar log home.
For most, building a home is a once-in-a-lifetime endeavor, but New Hampshire natives, Tom and Sue Garside, are seasoned pros at the custom home game. Over the years, they have built their share of homes, from cozy cape cods to formal Georgian colonials. With plenty of experience under their belts, we’re especially proud of their glowing recommendation of their Ward Cedar log home:
“This one stands out,” says Sue. “Every other house has been cookie cutter, but our Ward has character through and through. We feel so at home here.”
After researching other log home companies to create a home for their wooded, creek-side property, the couple was drawn to Ward Cedar for the naturally-insect-resistant cedar logs. “But what really sold us was meeting with the local rep,” says Sue. “They were so personal, and we clicked well.”
Ward Cedar’s design team worked closely with Tom and Sue to ensure their log home hit every mark on their wish list. “I had very specific ideas, and they worked long and hard with us,” shares Sue. “They were willing to move things around and change the plans multiple times to get things right.”
The final design is a 2,400-square-foot beauty with an easy-flowing floor plan. “It’s open and inviting but warm and cozy,” says Sue. A spacious kitchen, punctuated with white cabinets and striking cobalt-blue Viking appliances, opens to the great room, notable for its vaulted ceilings, log truss and a wall of glass that includes four sets of French doors that open to the home’s full wrap-around porch. (This area earns the honor of favorite spot in the house.)
A master on the main features a spa-like en suite bathroom, while an open loft and walk-out basement ensure plenty of space for when the couple’s children and grandchildren come over to enjoy snowmobiling, four-wheeling and quality time together. “Every weekend is a family affair,” says Sue.
And, if you’re wondering if there are any new builds in the couple’s future, they quickly affirm they saved the best for last. “This was our dream home since we were 17-years-old,” says Sue. “The kids will be taking over this one.”
