Comparing Log Home Companies

Now That You've Decided To Build A Log Home, What's Next?

You’ve settled on the choice to build a log home or hybrid.  The following stage you take is one of the most significant, comparing log home companies.  More often than not, a log home producer is chosen on a price that you may see on a website and not founded on the quality or features.  There are many items that should be considered to achieve an “Apples to Apples” comparison.  For example,  are the logs pre-cut, amount of extra work needed to be done at the work site, what log species is provided, window choices, how customized can you go, and so forth.  All of these are reflected in the cost and should be considered carefully.

So where do you start?  Limit your choices to companies that have a good reputation, top notch service, and have been in business the longest.  After all you are entrusting a company to provide you with one of your largest investments of your lifetime and you’ll want to make sure they are still around to provide service if needed.

Visit websites – There is a wealth of information on the internet and most log home company’s website provides the information you need.

Take a tour – A website can be great, but don’t judge a company just by their website.  Take a tour of the company’s manufacturing facilities.  Meet the people that work for the company and get a feel for pride in their work, their customer service, and the company’s approach.  If you are unable to make the trip, see if the company can jump on a video call or provide you with videos of their process.

What’s in the Log Home Package? – Each company has their own definition of a log or hybrid home package.  One may offer just random length logs, while another offers pre-cut and numbered logs that will save you time and labor.  Each manufacturer is different in what they have to offer for your dream home.  Most will have a detailed materials list on their website for you to view to see if they offer a weather-tight shell package or more of a complete package that includes your interior walls, doors, and more.

Learn the lingo – As you do your research, you may come across words that don’t make sense to you at the time.  Ward has comprised a list of log home lingo so you can become familiar with some terms that are used in the industry.

Don’t make it all about price - As you research and compare to see what is best for you, don’t just make your decision on a package price alone.  Also compare the quality, quantity, and service.

  • Quality – What species of wood does the manufacturer use?  How much pre-cutting is done?  What is the moisture content of the logs and will it affect the settlement of your home?
  • Quantity – What amount of materials are you getting from the manufacturer?  How much do you need to get locally?
  • Service – Is the company responsive?  Is there a number to ask for advice throughout the process and even after construction?  Some companies include this, others charge for this service.

As you make the investment of building a log home or hybrid, it should be an enjoyable one.  Also it is essential to make an informed choice so always ask as many questions as you can.
