Think About Your Closet

How wide does your closet need to be?

If you want to have hanging on both sides of a walk-in closet, the closet needs to be 7-feet wide as shown in the example at right.  It's simple math-you have a door leading into the closet that's typically 2-feet 8-inches wide and you need 2 feet on either side for hanging clothes.  Back when 2-foot wide interior doors were still being used, you could get away with narrower closets measuring just 6-feet in width.

If all you have is 6-feet in width to work with, consider installing 12-inch to 16-inch deep shelving along the closet wall door opening.  Beyond the door opening, you can continue with traditional hanging.  This solution permits today's wider doors while maximizing your closet storage potential!
