Making Room

Making Room

Dining areas have always been gathering spots for family and friends.  Layouts are usually pretty straightforward.  For ease of seating access, the dining table is typically centered in the space and topped by a stylish light fixture-also centered in the room.  This design often works well, until a buffet and/or hutch is added.

Hutches are generally 12" - 18" deep and for display of china, glasses, and collectibles.  Typically deeper and 36-40" high, a buffet functions as a servery for hot dishes with convenient storage under.  Many times hutches sit atop buffets.

A problem can arise when the buffet/hutch is added to your dining area and causes the table to be off-center in the room and in relation to the light fixture.  The solution is a "hutch space" indentation in one of the walls, providing a place for the hutch while still allowing the table to be centered.
